How do I fix a shower faucet from leaking when the shower is on?

Question:When I pull the lever up to turn the shower on, water still pours out the faucet, when it should be all coming out the shower head. Suggestions?

Answers:
your tub spout will either be held on to a pipe by a set screw,(there will be a small hole on the under side of the spout), or screwed on to the pipe if the pipe is threaded. check first to see if there is a set screw, if there is, you will need an allen wrench to remove or loosen the screw. you can buy these wrenches at a hardware store, they come in a pack, or foldable like a pocket knife, in common sizes. before you try to remove the screw, cover the drain opening with a wash cloth, so you don't lose the set screw. then write down the brand of shower faucet and head to the plumbing supply house for a replacement. check the yellow pages first to find one that carries your brand, if you give them a call, they might be able to tell you where the model # is located so you can write that down before you go. if not, you will need to take your spout with you so they can match it up. except for the part about the set screw, a threaded spout would unscrew counter clockwise, and you would need to bring it along to be matchd for style and pipe size. good luck, i hope this helps you take nice long hot showers! its a lot of work, your mixing valve has worn seals most likely. to fix this means shutting off the water coming into the shower handle, cutting into the wall or behind your tub insert and soldering in a new mixing valve. Thats why most people just deal with the faucet leak.
The seal on the diverter is bad. It needs to be repaired or replaced. If it is the type that is located on the tub spout, it's easier and cheaper to replace the spout. Easy to do.
replace the washer inside the shower assembly..its either rubber or plastic.
Maybe the rubber washers (o-ring), inside the faucet itself needs to be replaced. Shut off water supply first before repairing.
your mixing valve washers have to be changed or you might need a new faucet.
