you can get proprietary sticky stuff remover (i think it's called 'sticky stuff remover' :-)
acetone and petrol are the same type of solvent as meths, so if they don't work, i doubt meths/ surgical spirit will work

WD 40. or almost any kind of oil. it dissolves the glue.

Personally, I use Elmer's Sticky Out. It's not harsh or chemical-intensive. It smells like citrus oil, and gets off all the adhesive left behind by stubborn labels.
The bottle says that it "removes crayon, labels, most glues, stickers, tape, oil paint, rubber cement, and more!"

Look for a wonderful solvent product called 'sticky stuff remover' it comes in a small bottle and is perfect for the job you describe. Petrol is not such a good idea unless you intend to burn the lot anyway :)
get a nail remover and leave it on for a minute or two then get a old toothbrush then put hairspry or alchohol with water then brush on the sticky part.
do it for 5 mins, after that get a piece of old cloth and rub it down with plain hot water.
then it should go away!
A citrus cleaner or actual citris juice will work. There is also a product called goo gone that works great.

I always use cooking oil - smear it on the night before when I'm going to bed, and then in the morning use a dishcloth or similar with hot soapy water and it comes off with a bit of scrubbing. Also used WD40 and in the past have sat picking away for hours!!

In the kitchen shop called Lakeland they sell Sticky Stuff Remover, that more or less removes sticky labels from most everything.
Goof off or Goo gone, both work great.

Any sort of solvent e.g. nail varnish remover, thinners, petrol, meths etc, sure gets the label off
– some very rapidly but usually melts, frosts, or just plain dissolves plastic or cellulose paint .
– Till someone told me to use WD 40
- wow - this really works and if there is any residual oilyness after wiping, a little talc powder on a cloth will take away the slippyness and smell.
Sometimes heating it up with a hairdryer is all that is needed without actually wetting the label with anything
