Our whole house air conditioning unit is being damaged by falling icicles in the winter. How can we protect it
Question:I just had a repair tech leave here and he said the damage is very bad. Is there some kind of cage type thing we could use in the winter months? Does anyone know what we can do?
Answers:
we were told years ago not to cover the out side units. that the air need to circulate and its worse to have the moisture trapped in side. because it causes the unit to rust. What we did is cut a piece of plywood 3/4 in thick to fit on the top of the out side compressor. nothing can fall in ,the coils are protected and the air can circulate. if your unit is in an area that someone or something might knock it off then make it wider and make legs out of 2x4's and them place it over the top. This should solve your problem from more damage. I have no idea how to fix the existing damage.
a piece of plywood over the condenser or build a deck looking thing out od the new composite deck boards and place it on top.
If it's a window air conditioner, you can make a wooden box to cover it in the winter when you are not using it.
put a square piece of wood board on top of condenser than wrap with tarp, that should protect it.
