Why use teflon tape?

Question:

Answers:
teflon tape is not a sealant but it allows lubrication in the threads so when you are tightening it it will reach the bottom taper of the threads you are screwing together to better assure a tight, leak free seal

To seal the space between the pipe threads, thus... preventing leaks.
I never did the first half of my career.
Just used pipe dope.
'Pipe joint compound' is the official name of it.
Others call it 'thread sealant'.

I'll say pipe dope that has teflon in it is pretty good to use.
Like Rectoseal T, for example.
the material teflon is good for high temperature application. the temperature can withstand higher than rubber or pvc tape.
used to make numerouse connections leak proof. not to be used on a thread that has a nut and olive on the same end, as the olive makes the seal water tight. but to be wrapped around a thread that screws into a female connection.
in uk, if to be used on gas, we use thicker tape, sometimes called one wrap.
can also be used to use as packing for gland nuts, and also wrapped round connections as "washers"
more often then not,,, once UNscrewed, should be taped again.
hope this answers your question.
Because it is quicker and less messy than pipe dope compound. I can carry a roll of tape in my shirt pocket but not a can of dope. Teflon tape is a great lubricant for pipe threads. Pipe threads are tapered and the lubricant helps assure the pipe goes all the way together and seals.
