Answers:
to begin with at 500 to 750 sq ft per ton your unit is way undersized...even if they did a load calculation and figured the heat gain/loss of your home this is to small a unit...at 750 sq ft per ton (the highest sq ft per ton anyone should have) you would need 41/2 tons of air conditioning...what i would do is install a 2 ton unit for the upstairs and you will be able to keep house cool...or even have them come back and install the unit your house really needs

almost sounds as if you need a bigger condenser
There could be many reasons why the unit is not cooling. If you just had it installed last Thursday, then call your contractor back and let them know the unit is not working properly.
i got 3.5 ton a/c in a 1500 sq. foot house (texas).
sounds to me like its not enough a/c. a lot of the 2 storey houses built here will have 2 a/c units.
Go to the outside a/c unit of your house. There should be a drainage pipe coming from the house that is PVC pipe, it should have a T on the end for draining. Take the T part off, then use a wetvac or vacuum cleaner on the end of the pipe and see if you get clogged water and gunk out of it. Also, if there is a water trey behind your a/c filter that has water in it, go ahead and empty it as well.
I'm used to seeing 3.5 ton condensers on houses of 1800 to 2200 square feet. Of course I live in the south and its much hotter. we use the method of 1 ton of cooling for 500 sqft. I have also seen new houses that insulation was not put in the attics. but for sure contact the people who built the house. Your house should have at least 2 units installed. 1 for upstairs and 1 for down. not sure how u canadians do things up there.

I think the unit is too small.
I have a 3 ton unit in a 1000 square ft
house.
A. Unit does sound a bit too small, especially for a two-story
B. Call the contractor if it's all brand new.
C. Is your 72 degree temp reading what the t-sat says, or are you checking temp. independently.
D. Is the upstairs much warmer than the main floor?
hello fellow Canadian - i am wondering what the reason is to cool the house below room temperature. heating the house above 72 f in winter is reasonable but why below 72 f in the summer. are you cooling people or chickens?

i submit to you the possibility the installer knew this fact and installed accordingly.
