How do i repaint my house gate?
Question:How do i repaint my house gate in the front. Right now its white in color but the paint is chipping off and its fading away. I bought sand paper and a paint scrapper. Can someone tell me what i have to do to repaint it?
Answers:
Scrape where there is loose paint. Sand any rough edges where paint has been scraped off or peeled off. Then put exterior primer on any bare wood. Paint with 100% acrylic exterior paint, two coats. Should last 15 years.
You will have to choose a paint scheme which is compatible with the existing scheme or remove the existing completely otherwise the different types of paint will reject each other.
If you are not sure, remove all the paint, a blow torch and scraper will help.
Paint with a good quality wood primer and make good any cracks/splits with wood filler. Let this harden then lightly sand and touch up over 'filled' areas with the primer.
Allow 24 hours to harden up then lightly sand again. Paint with oil based undercoat suitable to the type and colour of the finishing coat. Allow to dry rub down any high spots or brush marks and paint again applying the paint at right angles to the first coat if possible.
Allow to dry/harden and lightly sand before applying a suitable gloss top coat. apply a further topcoat if necessary.
Make sure all the paints are compatible. The supplier will advise and you will probably get all of the paints made by the same manufacturer.
If this is all done carefully with due attention to surface preparation the scheme will last many years with only occasional need for a fresh topcoat.
Always store your paints upside down, this will allow the pigments (solids) to settle towards the lid and make hand mixing after opening much easier.
