Options to cool a hot garage?

Question:I have a 400 sq.ft garage that faces the sun alot and consequently gets baked during the summer. How big of a portable AC unit will work, do those things really work, and any guesses who long it would take. I like to do things in my garage, but if it takes all day to cool down, why bother. Any other sugguestions??
Thanks

Hey man,

I have some ideas for you. When you work in your garage in the summer, a normal a/c window units is good enough to cool the garage down. Get a couple of portable fans, and plug them in. My name is Andrew also, so be like me when you work in the heat. Take your shirt off, when you work in you hot garage. If you do get a/c for your garage, still take that shirt off when you work in the garage. It will be hot anyway, so you are better off cooler yourself off.

If you take your shirt off it still will be hot, but you won't have a sweaty shirt. Besides a/c you have to think of these things I mentioned. You will be hotter with a shirt on, then being shirtless. It won't hurt going shirtless working in our hot garage.
E-mail me, I can give you better help with this.

a swamp cooler is usually the best option for the garage if you climate allows.
Evaporating cooler if you live in the right climate.
AC units use allot of energy and therefore cost allot of money to run and they do take along time to get the whole room cold. If you open the garage door all the cold air rushes out so what’s the point. In our family we have always installed an older ceiling fan in the garage to move the air around. I also have one of those mister kits you can buy at the hardwood store installed in my garage. There like 15' for $20. The moving air and water mist on the concert cool the garage cheaply. Works well for my dog!
Since there probably is no insulation and has a metal garage door I recommend a 16,000. That would be a 230v unit. The largest 115v will probably be 10,000 If you have open rafters. I doubt it will do it. If you can put in a drop ceiling with insulation, that would help. Don't bother with anything smaller than10,000.
Have similar problem,
Some improvement w/ larger peak vents & fan.not good enough.
Yes, the portable spot AC units work ( wish I had one). & as far as I know they just plug in & can be rolled around.
No idea what makes them tick, but they cooled things down pretty quick in unfinished construction area.
