Central Air VS Window Air?

Question:My Central unit is about 15 years old and starting to give me problems. I have heard from people that Window units will use less elec. I have been unable to find any studies or info on this. Does anyone know where I can find some reliable info?

Answers:
A new, high efficiency Central A/C will likely cost less to run than two older, in-the-wall A/Cs.

The real trick is to have the central A/C sized properly for your home. Many installers oversize the units and that kills efficiency big time.

Window units, which I find unsightly, may use less power but it will be because you will have much less consistent temp throughout the dwelling.
Window units actually use more electricity. Anything powered with 220 volts is less expensive than 110 volts. You will also be cooling only one room per unit. Check the prices of the number of units you will need to cool the house and then the price to replace the central air unit.
go with central air
