I had birds removed from my home's vent, the vent was disinfected as well but an odor remains, any suggestions
Question:The birds nested in a vent that connects to one of my home's bathrooms. I paid a company to remove the birds and disinfect the vent, however, an odor remains. I suspect that either an egg spoiled or a bird died. I have been unable to access the vent in a fashion that will allow me to check for either an egg or dead bird. I've sprayed Lysol in the vent and I light scented candles daily, however, these serve as only temporary fixes. I'm in need of any suggestions that could provide a permanent fix to remove the odor. Thanks,

As a Nuisance Wildlife Control Tech. that bird proofs over 300 homes per year, I may have a couple options for you. If the vent that the smell is coming from is a second floor bath exhaust, you can usually access the duct from the attic. If the vent is from a first floor bath exhaust in a 2 story home, you may have more difficulty. Usually when there is a strong odor, it is from a dead bird or two. (which usually smells like 20 dead mice!). In time (2 or 3 weeks) the smell will subside. Use caution sticking hangers or anything sharp that could tear the duct, into the vent. Our company uses a special probe that can be inserted into the duct without tearing it and remove any leftover debris. Did you call the company back and mention the smell to them? And if so, what was their response? Usually the only way to remove the duct (first floor) is to make a hole right by the fan where the air connection is. I would not recommend this as it can get complicated. If you would like further assistance, you may call Animals R Us at (847) 602-7226
put a few charcoal briquets in there ..it absorbs the odor
