Is there such a thing as 0.5hp air-conditioner?
Question:my father says there's no such thing as a 0.5hp air-cond and my husband says there is. free air-cond but there's nothing printed on it to tell me whether it's 0.5hp or 1hp. Trying to decide which room to install the air-cond in. Thanks.

to figure the horsepower of an air conditioner you would multiply the voltage times the amps and divide this by 750..so if the amps were 12then you would multiply 12x115 = 1,380/750=1.84 hp now this would be total horsepower of compressor and motor to find hp of just the compressor you would have to know the amps the compressor pulls..a 0.5 hp window unit would be small 5000 btus or less
Most A/C units are measured in BTU's (British thermal units), or tons. A motor inside the unit can be 0.5hp or 1hp however that would have little to do with the unit you want to buy. Figure out the sq. feet you need to cool and talk to a salesman. Sounds like your looking for a "window" unit so you can do a little research on line.
The important values is the rating in "amps"--- ex: "7.5 amps "
