How do I know when my new hot water heater tank is full? Does it shut off on it's own? My manual doesn't say.

Open all the hot water taps in the house before opening the supply valve to water heater. This is necessary to purge all the air in the empty tank, and in the water lines. Turn off each tap inside when it stops sputtering and starts delivering a steady stream of water. At that point, the heater tank is full and you've purged the air from the lines.
make sure everything is connected properly and when the tank is full it will shut off
you will hear the water stop running.
before turning the power on, run all of your hot water faucets for three minutes. wait for the tank to fill again and then turn on the power
If you open the hot water tap in the house (slightly) before turning on the cold water to the tank. You can tell that the hot water tank is full when you get a steady stream from the tap. When you first fire the burner on the hot water heater, it will seem to run a long time. This is normal, the burner has to heat all the water in the tank instead of just part of it which is what it usually does. If everything is right, after heating is acheived, the water heater will cycle on and off intermittently. This is how it works, remember to check for leaks both water and gas. And use a blanket on it to save money.

I go to the furthest hot water tap and open the valve. It is also important to remove the aerator before you turn the water on. That way if there are foreign debris in the line, it will not plug the aerator and will wash down the drain. Once the line runs clear and without air bubbles, then you can turn it off and replace the aerator and the tank is full.
if your pop off valve vents outside just open that. then you will be able to tell the difference in the sound of the tank when it is full. you then can walk out and look at the water flowing out of the tube from the pop off valve.
This also will let you know you have a clear line too. those tubes sometimes get fill with bug nests and then can cause other problems it the pop off is ever needed from a faulty heater overheating.
Provided your water heater is wired and connected correctly, you should LISTEN to your water heater if your manual doesn't SAY anything to you.
