I drained pool, how do i clean algae, smooth pool surfaces?
Question:I have a 20' x 40' pool. My water has not been changed in over 8 years. I have too much trouble maintaining it with chemicals. I would like to drain pool and somehow smooth out the roughness of the pool surface.Black algae, etc.) Pool was built many many years ago(30-40 years) I was thinking of having professional resurface, but cost too high. Anything I can do to buy some time before hiring a professional? Thanks.

Over time there is an accumulation of chemicals that makes it hard to regulate the water properly. The water also loses its sparkling clear quality. It is definitely time to drain the pool. When it is drained, I would use diluted chlorine or laundry bleach to get rid of the algae. As the other answers have suggested, you could also try using a power washer. However you may not be able to get rid of the rough surface because pool acid may have etched the plaster over the years. You could try putting a skim coat (i.e., very thin) on the existing plaster to fill in the roughness, but I have never done it and can't assure you that it is easy or that you'll get good results. If you give it a try, be sure to use a trowel with rounded corners that is designed for pools:
