The float on my subpump is broken. Can you replace the float or will I have to buy a new pump?
Question:

It depends on what kind of float you have.
If it's the kind that is just a float on the end of a cord, those generally can be replaced, although it may require some wiring unless it's the type that has a special cord with a double plug (outlet molded behind a plug) that you plug the pump into.
If it's the kind that slides up and down on a rod, that type controls a switch that is typically inside the pump motor, which sits at the top of a long shaft, well above the water. That switch may be replaceable, but like the simple float switch I mentioned above, it will require wiring as well, and also some disassembly of the pump motor.
If you do attempt wiring of any kind around sump pumps, be sure the electricity is OFF before exposing any wires or touching any electrical parts, cords, plugs, etc.
if you want to repair it use some good epoxy and fix it if possible if not try to find a replacement float. good luck!!
The easy way to get over the problem is to get a siutable size of polystyrene and fit it to replace the pump float, I have a subpump in my garage inspection pit and have been using a block of polystyrene for about 10 years and it just works great, and it has never been changed, and the bonus is it cost nothing, it can be fitted as a push on to the arm or can be attached by plastic cable ties, depending on how the original was fitted.
Try it it, really works, and you have nothing to lose. You can get polystyrene from most electrical retaiers as the just throw them away.
Polystyrene can be cut to match the original float very easily.
YOU CAN REPLACE JUST THE FLOAT
Im a Plumber so here you go.,
98% of the pumps a homeowner buys you can fix the float.
But On some units the repair kit could be just as muc as a new unit.
If you get a new unit use a liberty pump. There are 2 kinds for the most part 1 has the float on the side the other is a ball that floats. And since I dont know what or where you have the pump I cant tell you what 1 you need if you want e-mail me with the info and I will let you know what you need. Or even if you need parts I can tell you the sites also
Goodluck
