Central A/C Problem?
Question:I've noticed today that it had gotten very warm in this house. After looking at my thermostat, it was 81 degrees, and it said it was cooling. (It's a digital thermostat). I noticed the vents were blowing air and felt the air that was blowing and it was warm! Checked the outside unit and it wasn't even running.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. I've replaced the filter.
2. Reset the thermostat.
3. Checked the inside breaker (it was on, but I flipped it off and back on again).
None of these things has helped at all. I went outside to the unit and checked the exterior power box and the switch was in the "off" position.
I know this may sound like a dumb question, but is it supposed to be off?? And if not, what would have caused it to flip off? Would it be safe to go ahead and flip it back on?
Thank you so much for your help!!
Answers:
No, the diconnect for the condenser should not be in the off position. Go ahead and turn it back on. Nothing is going to blow up. If you have faulty equipment then the breaker on the disconnect will trip to the off position again. That is what it is there for (to provide protection).
If it trips again, call an a/c contractor for your area and have them take a look at the unit.
The first answer is a good one, some kid probably thought he was being funny turning it off, or it is a breaker that tripped.
No it shouldn't be off, strange, maybe someone's messing with you.
Yup, switch it to on. If it still doesn't work, call your local A/C tech, the unit might be low on charge (refrigerant), or it could a couple other issues.
Keep that filter replaced (check it every month - mostly if you have pets). Your A-coil should stay cleaned, or you could blow a motor which costs about 400bucks to replace. You don't want that.
The range for a fix could be from just a service call charge to something more expensive like that motor.
However the case, it sounds like if the ac is blowing warm air, it is low on charge. A lb or 2 could cost about 80bucks.
You can turn on the switch. If it trips again after you rested, it could be a loose wire or the breaker is going faulty check your t-stat make sure is in auto position an in cool. call some to check it
