Hardwood Floor Shine?
Question:We have dark hardwood flooring in our new home but it doesn't shine or gloss like other people's homes. Is there a mix or chemical that I can use to make it shine and gloss?
Also, is there something (or a way) to smoothen scratches on hardwood? Thanks!
Answers:
It may not be shiny because they may not have used a glossy finish on it but a satin finish.
If you want it shiny, you would have to sand it all down and apply a glossy floor finish. Then they would be shiny.
To smooth scratches, you sand it down a bit and reapply the proper finish gloss finish you have on your floor. Make sure your floor is not a stained floor (color wise). Test sanding in an inconspicuous area to see if it is or not. You can tell if after you sand, the floor is much lighter against the finish.

Coat it with a high gloss polyurethane. Follow manufacturers directions.
Furniture polish will temporarily hide scratches. You probably need to have your floors refinished.
There are waxes and finishes that you can use on Hardwoods to make them shine.
Most people use a poly urethane finish to seal the wood. However there are waxes available that will do the same thing only they are not as permanent. The problem with waxes though is that at some point you will have to remove them especially before re-finishing the wood, and that process can be daunting to some
You need to sand it back, this gets rid of the scratches and brings up the grain of the timber. if its dark wood there shouldnt be a problem to re varnish it over .your hardware store guy should help you with stain or varnish selection. Its not hard to do you and a mate could do it ,even if you invite a mate whose willing to give you a hand over a weekend or so. when your picking up your matierials at the hardware store the guy there should know what types of sand paper to use ,what grades(fine sanding ) and of course the type of varnish applicable to your floor.Remember though you and a mate be doing this job so when you pick up the matierials and tools to do the job, you might as well pick up a couple of boxes of beers, its gonna be a long weekend ..youll be right!
