House door latch is stuck and door can not shut.?
Question:I have taken the mechanism apart to try to install a new doorknob but the part that is stuck will not come apart from the interior locking mechanism.
Answers:
I'm guessing it is a Kwikset (or Black and Decker) lock. They break this way. A special tool is required to remove the spindle before the latch will allow the knobset to be removed. You will have to destroy the lock to get it out. A Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel is the best tool to cut the spindle off close to the latch mechanism inside the door, then use a 2' or 2 1/8" holesaw to cut apart the latch. If you can't get those tools, brute force is another option, but that's doing it the hard way.
Either way, you have to rip it apart.
I hope that makes sense. I'm a retired locksmith, and done dozens of these, but it's easier to do than to describe. And it's way easier with the proper tools.
spray some wd-40 in there wait 5 minutes. Tap stuck part with hammer. Try again.
if you mean the plunger that goes into the door jamb is stuck in the mechanism, usually a light tap with a hammer (opposite from the way you want it to go) will release it. Good idea to try WD-40 with that - If that doesn't work, sewing machine oil on the mechanism should help. If it is rusted in (though probably just out of alignment), tighten the screws that hold the knob in place, and use "easy out", a hardware store item for making screws that are stuck easier to remove. Of course removing the whole mechanism, and cleaning (if rusty, use Naval Jelly - follow directions very carefully), and re-install. If that fails - spend the 9 bucks and buy a new one.
Both answers above are pretty correct. If that fails put your key in thr lock and hit it with a hammer softly. This is called bumping. 90% of locks ia America can be opened this way without a trace. When you tap the key with a hammer the tumblers will jump up for an instant, allowing you to open the door. A rubber mallet works best. You can learn this in under an hour.
