When I touch this funny looking spot on the carpet, its NOT wet...What is this stuff?

Question:Since I have moved to this old house (its got the basement entrance on the OUTSIDE of the house and the landlord does NOTHING when we have complained about stuff in the past!!). I've had like post nasal drip (with a bad taste in my mouth) everday since April 2006. I go to the doctor and he gives me antibiotics and nasal spray.

I'm including some pictures.

Answers:
you should pull up a corner of the carpet-- these look like old stains that most likely have molded. Your symptoms are those of someone irritated by mold. You should seriously consider getting out of that house for good.

This looks almost like it could be an old oil stain. try using some dish washing liquid and scrub the stain ----if it is oil it will take forever to get it out.
Does look like some one spilled oil. But that would transfer to a paper towel easily and you would see it on the towel.

It looks like a time some one spilled a wax candle on my old carpet. It would be real hard.
Have you tried renting a rug Dr or something?

By the pattern it looks like a spill occurred there. Or something overflowed from nearby?

Just hard to tell in the pics. Good luck with the landlord.
