The outside of my freezer is REALLY hot, is that dangerous?
Question:The freezer is about four years old and is a stand alone upright GE. It was moved once from Arizona to Texas. We just defrosted it today. Two hours after we plugged it back in, the outside (except for the door) got very warm to the touch. For example if you put your hand on surface it becomes very uncomfortable after a couple of seconds. We also noticed that some of the tubes inside are a little bit corroded. I really don't want to buy a new freezer but I want my family to be safe. Is this dangerous and should I buy a new one or repair it?
Answers:
It sounds normal.More heat is inside the freezer after having it off for a while. That heat gets moved out to your condenser coil. Most freezers today dont have fans to force that heat to the outside air, they run that heat through the outer cabinet and it naturally travels to the cooler surrounding air.If there is no rear cover and no fan motor near that compressor this is how yours is designed.Just give it room the breathe and it should be fine.It might mention it in the use & care guide.

The most important thing is to check the cooling fan around the compressor, that blow air to cool it, if you didn’t notice any air flowing from the back or under the freezer, the fan could be defect, and you should call the service, if the fan is bad, it might refer to a bad capacitor, or bad fan, and if the problem is from the fan kept unfixed the compressor will malfunction soon, but if the fan is working and you still have excessive heat it might be the thermostat, it is not working or it might be that you put the freezer too close to the wall, and prevent ventilation, another important thing is the condenser, it gets dirty easy and should be cleaned periodically.
