You can either use a pin to pick off the lent on the rollers inside or they make a replacement ball that looks like velcro. Stick it in, roll it around a few times and put back in your original ball.
Don't bother wasting your time. Go to wally world and get yourself an optical mouse for about $10-$15. Problem solved forever!

Easy! Turn it upside down and twist that dial. It'll open and the ball will fall out. Use a damp cloth. Stick it inside and clean the gunk off the rollers and wheels inside. Clean the ball too. Put ball back inside, twist the top back down, and presto! A clean mouse!
