I had a lot of water leaking above my hot water heater from a tin tube coming from the ceiling.?

Question:It did stop leaking from the tin tube after about 15 minutes. Now there is a small leak from a white round thing above the hot water heater. I tied a small towel above the hot water heater right below the white round thing to catch the water.
We have not had any rain today, and the water seem to be coming from the tin tube, not directly from the ceiling.
What could be causing this? Any ideas on what I should do?

Answers:
That sounds like your chimney. You need to get on the roof and put sealer around it and make sure that the flashing isn't cracked.

Do you have a roof mount swamp cooler?? It could be leaking
Nope..the tube that is light tin means you have a gas hot water heater..this tube is a vent that goes onto the top of your roof and lets the fumes/carbon monoxide out..On the roof where that vent comes out..there is a rubber boot that tucks under the shingles above it, and on top of the ones below it..the boot simply fits and slides tightly over the tin pipe you see and can be bought at any hardware store for under 5 dollars..measure the pipe and replace it..get a gallon of roof cement to put around the bottom plate of the boot... this will fix it..if l;eft un repaired..you can develop trusses rotting out, decking on roof etc..as well as interior damage..
