A/C compressor question?
Question:I have a scroll compressor in the condensing unit that starts hard. This has a 10 year guarantee on the compressor and we bought it six years ago so we need to get it fixed. How much time does it really take to change this? We have had several people that work on them say (other than the people we have the warranty from) that they are trying to screw us on the labor. I would like to get some opinions from the people who work on A/C units so I have some information going in. Thanks, Christy

I would change out your compressor in a day or less if there is decent access. I am talking from experience because I have been a tradesman all my professional life.
To find out how much it would cost, take the hourly labor times an eight hour day, add the cost of the compressor (if there is one) and some minor material. The freon should be reclaimed and reinstalled plus a little to top it off.
NOTE: If your compressor burns up then you will need all new freon.
Without knowing the size and manufacturer of your unit it may be hard to tell you how many hours are extimated for repair on a compressor. What I can tell you is, this, compressors and coil replacements are the two most labor intenstive repairs on a/c units.
