After stripping old wood furniture, what should be used to prep the wood before staining?

Question:This was built in the 40's.

Answers:
Wash it with a TSP solution then clear water to remove any residual stain/paint remover and oils, then let dry for 24 hours. After that lightly sand with 1000 steel wool to get an evenly textured surface and wipe with a clean cloth(preferably t-shirt type so no lint). Finally re-stain and use the steel wool between staining to prevent an uneven finish. Seal final product with clear (high/medium/low shine) sealant to protect and preserve. Good Luck!

Lightly sand the furniture before staining. If you use multiple coats use steel wool between coats but make sure each coat is completely dry before beginning the next coat.
