After the horrible thunderstorm in Oklahoma we woke up to a leak in our kitchen.?
Question:The ceiling tile even fell in there is water on the wall its a big mess. My question is would my home owners insurance cover this? Also would like to know what the average cost is to roof a house on your own in Oklahoma? Our house is approx. 1400sqf.
Answers:
You will have to look at your policy. Some policies will not cover certain things. Was the roof past it's life before the storm? If the roof was shot then they will probably not cover it.
More importantly you need to find where the leak happened and put a tarp over it or patch it before the next storm. Moisture leads to mold. Once the insurance company hears the word "mold" they will not want to do business with you.
Roofing costs are a local thing. In OKC it will cost a lot more than in Poteau for the same roof.
Since severe storms are common in that part of the country you might consider a metal roof. Even baseball sized hail won't destroy metal roofs.
If you are in a financial pinch and the insurance company won't pay you can use roll asphalt. You can do it yourself, it is not great but it will keep water out.
Damage to the roof due to a storm is normally covered by insurance, as is the interior damage. Cost to repair/replace depends on the type of roofing used. Let your insurance do it for you...that's what you paid the premiums for.
you may not have to replace the whole roof just that room.. This past April I had the same problem and we just patched ours with new tin.. Just check around dont go with the first fixer upper u find go with the best price and deal. And your homeowners should definitely cover that it was caused by a storm and thats what ins. is for right... Good Luck
