How do I fix a squeaky subfloor?
Question:I have the subfloor exposed and will be putting down new flooring (nail down wood) and thought I would fix the sqeaks before installation of the new flooring.
Answers:
Find out where your floor joists are and then get some 12 or 16 penny galvanized spiral nails (depending on thickness of floor) and nail them down, checking for squeaks after each nail. Could be time consuming but works great, dont use drywall screws unless you want the squeak back in five years, they will rust from the moisture under the floor... Good luck!
Lay #30 tarpaper between subfloor and top floor.
nail each corner on an angle 2 to 3 inches inward.
Use dyr wall screws and scew the squeaky panels down.
Use screw to hold the subfloor down. If there is a space between the joist and subfloor then install a shim and screw it down.
It is wise to correct the squeak now, as it will bother you for as long as you live there if you don't. Everythime you walk on the squeaky part. Good luck.
