Starter rope jerks out of my hand when starting chain saw. Is there a remedy for this?

If this problem has just developed, check your crank coil (which is in the crank case). If it is a new chainsaw then it needs to be broken in. If is is a second hand chainsaw, and you have never used one before, be careful! Just like a skidoo/quad/lawnmower, it needs the jerks to start. Hand on tight to the handle.
There is no crankcase in a chain saw. The engine is a two stroke and has oil mixed with the gas. The problem you are having is that on every revolution of the motor you are hitting a compression stroke and the motor resists turning. This problem will be worse when the motor is hot because the compression ratio will be higher. If the motor backfires as it sometimes will then the reverse motion will certainly pull the handle from your grip. I would suggest that you try to pull the start rope with a sudden fast motion to get over the compression stroke. Alternatively put your foot through the grip area and stand on it. Then pull from a crouched position. That way the saw is firmly planted on the ground as you pull and the chain will not move around. Too bad electric starters weight so much. Good luck and saw safe
