I have a ground floor water tank system, which is filled from the mains.?

Question:The water seems to be comming into the tank at a drip via the float valve. Is it possible that this vave could be clogged up with lime scale? our water is very hard here.

Answers:
quite possible, and the pipes that feed the valve. Just last week I had a piece of scale break free and then it lodged in the toilet water supply and would not allow the fill valve to shut off. good luck.

It is possible. If you turn off your mains tap. Remove the split pin at the end of the float arm. Remove the arm and valve and see if it is clogged. If it looks OK you must have problem with your mains tap. You will need a plumber to look at this.
Has the main stopcock been turned down and is the float valve stuck in the up position due to lime scale?
iwould replace the ballcock and valve it should not be very expensive
Change the ballcock, or if you are able change the diapham inside it, that will sort the drip either way. i'd change the ballcock personally.
I work on a large sports ground in Hampshire (u.k ) and when we had a similar problem to yours in the water supply tank in our pavilion roof ,we had a plumber replace the float valve on the tank and put a filter in the main water feed so that any scale did not get to the float valve, hope this helps.
It could be scaled up, or there is dirt or grit in the valve. I would suggest you change it for a new one. Turn off the water supply to this tank, and run off your hot water to lower the water level in the tank. Disconnect the 15mm pipe that lets the water in to fill the tank, and remove the ball valve by holding the ball valve inside the tank and turn the big back nut on the other side. Remove the valve and fit new one in reverse order. Turn off hot tap and turn water supply back on to fill tank and check water level. Adjust level until it is about 50mm below the overflow. Try not to lose a fibre washer on the 15mm pipe when you disconnect it, or the pipe will leak.
