How to fix a sewing machine?
Question:My sewing machine is about as old as I am (14 years) but it has been used very rarely. The last time it was used, it worked fine. Everytime I try to sew, the thread gets all knotted up in the fabric or the foot will not pull the fabric through, thus causing more knotting. I am using fairly thin fabric. How can I make it pull the fabric through?
Answers:
First try adjusting your tension. You may need to adjust both the upper and the bobbin, but start with the upper. If this doesn't work you may have to have a professional look at it. It should also be oiled regularly.
you should probally do the sweing machine dance. works everytime.
Make sure the feed dog (jagged teeth under the foot) is up to help feed the fabric through. And check to see if you are using the right size needle for that type of fabric. The needle does make a difference and so does the type of thread.
Check the manual to your machine for correct tension settings, or you may be able to find it online. It sounds like a problem with the tension. Try other fabrics also and see how they do. Very thin fabrics need a smaller needle size and usually a lower tension. The fabric may not be feeding through because of the tension and the knotted thread, not that there is something wrong with the feed dogs. Check to make sure the feed dogs are moving as you sew and that the machine is threaded correctly.
