Central Air just died--need to ask a question?
Question:My Central Air Condtioner stopped working. When I turn it on regular air blows through the vents, but the unit outside doesn't turn on. Does that usually mean I need to buy a new one or can these things be fixed? It died during a rain storm and I thought it might work today now that the rain stopped, but it hasn't. If I need a new unit outside can you guesstimate the cost anyone?
Thanks in advance.

It could easily be a capacitor or the fan in the outside unit. In our old AC, a grasshopper would get between the contacts every not and then and short it out. It was only a couple bucks plus the service call to get it fixed. The fan would be more expensive, prolly between one and two hundred would be my guess.
We got a new central AC a few months ago. We got a good deal because they were on sale at the end of winter. It cost a bit over $3K.
Same thing happened to me. 1 year and 1 month after the original warrantee expired, the condensor died. Had to replace the whole outside unit.
Call a servicing company. It may be as simple as a capacitor replacement. DO NOT try to DIY!
Yes it can be fixed, if you are not mechanically inclined I would suggest having a tech. come out and check it.
