Did blow a fuse?
Question:I installed a new dryer plug from 3 prong to a 4 prong. Now, I aligned all the hot wires in place and the neutral wire also, but I grounded the green wire to a tiney hole just above the main 3 wire recepticle. When went to plug in the wire into the wall it tripped the breaker box. Did I blow a fuse or do I need to replace the wire plug with a newer one?
Answers:
Yes you did "blow a fuse" so to speak, what you really did is trip the breaker like you said. Fuses were used a long time ago, but have since been replaced by the circuit breaker. Since dryers run on 220vAC, your plug on the wall has to wired correctly to match the dryer's plug. You need to have 2 110vAC inputs and at least one ground, and with a 4 prong outlet - 2 grounds. It sounds like you didn't get it wired just right and you are shorting out one of the power feeds to ground causing the breaker to trip.
I have included a couple of links below that may help in your quest. Otherwise you may want to consult a good electrician.
Best of luck.
? sounds like you need a new dryer as well?
You may need a new dryer or a professional electrician. Check whether the circuit breaker can handle the amount of current the dryer needs.
both the receptacle and the plug have to be 4wire.the ground wire, probably a bare copper wire should go under the screw that has the letter G on it.
ground the green wire to the box if its a metal box or attach it to the ground wire in the outlet box
