What does "set up your electric" mean in renting terminology ?
Question:Hi,
I am from india and am going to the US for grad studies. We have booked a apartment through the apartment website. Now the co-ordinator mails me saying
"Please make sure to set up your electric."
What does this mean ? would the apartments in US dont have any electric stuff like tube lights / bulbs / ACs / dish washer etc ?
Answers:
Some utilities are paid for by the landlord, but your electric bill is one you have to pay. Basically this involves you calling the electric company where you're going to be living and telling them where you're going to be living. They'll activate electrical service to that apartment, and bill you for what you use. That's all it means.
No, what the coordinator is referring to is contacting the electric company and switching the service to your name and address, so that you are responsible for the electric bills.
Couldn't hurt to have a few extra light bulbs too, I have had a couple of apartments where all the bulbs were removed before hand, but as for the rest, it should all be there.
call the local electric company and tell them your move in date, so they will begin to bill you for the electric and it will be set up!
The other answers are correct but there is one small detail they are leaving out. When you call the electric company in your area, they will get the information needed( your name , address for the service, etc.), but if you have not had previous service you will be required to pay a deposit before they will turn on the power. After this is paid, the service will be turned on and you will receive a monthly statement with your usage and payment amount. Hope this helps.
It means for you to contact the electric company and have the electric transferred into your name, or have it turned back on in your name.
