Help dryer not working?

Question:When I press the 'On' button the machine will just start up but if I just press it and let go it will stop right away. I need to hold the button in for a variable amount of time before it will go properly. While the button is held in there's a noise that comes from behind the panel and only when that noise goes off does the machine not need the button held in. I don't know if it's a chattering relay, arcing or whatever but I can hear it over the rumbling of the drum moving and it's a higher pitch noise than that.Once it's started it seems to do the job ok. It makes no difference if the machine has been off all day or on all day. After it's finished a cycle I'm back at the start with struggling to get it to start again.GOT SOME ONE COMING TO FIX IT TOMORROW COST £100 CAN I FIX IT MYSELF AND SAVE THE MONEY AND ARE THEY RIPPING ME OFF

Answers:
Need more info. If it's a spring loaded switch then it could be just the retainer holding the spring - thus rip off.
If it's an electronic switch and it's needing to be held in until some sort of sensor says "I've started" then it could be a circuit board replace, the board may be expensive if it's from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer...ie if it's an indesit machine then the part is supplied by Indesit)...but the Chinese are making ringers for everything and you can get a copy board for a few tens of quid.
It may not be the switch at all, something else could be making the switch think it's not on.
Good luck, but a new machine is £150, so be wary of parting with £100 to mend this one.

If it's the holding coil relay you could probably do it. Either turn off the breaker or unplug the cord. Next remove the rear cover from the control panel. Then locate the object connected to the wire from the " on " button. If it looks to have a wound wire coil as part of it, that's probably the culprit. Note how the wires are connected ( may be just a plug ) and remove it. Take it to an appliance parts store like Tribles, along with the data from the dryer name plate. They should be able to fix you up for maybe $ 30 or $ 40. Good luck.
that sounds like a good price for a service call its ether the switch or a relay in the back that kicks on when you press the start button you would have to remove the back panel on the dryer while it is plug ed in and switch it on and see if you can located the relay if its just the switch you would have to remove it and replace it with the same kind but remember to unplug it before reaching in the control area !
If its the relay then the repair bill should be around £80 all in, the relay's are around £40, so you decided if you think you can repair it, if its a Hotpoint or Creda, they are a fiddly job. Depending on the make and how old it is, you might be better off buying a new dryer, something like a Zanussi is around £125. Unless your model is a condenser, in which case its worth getting repaired.
