Question:Okay guys I told my friend that you guys and gals would give her the answers she needs..you have never let me down.smile. She is also afraid she might have to resize the window to get a proper fit. Any advice or websites with good information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks people.and have a great day!.smile.
Answers:
before you replace a window you should take three measurements, one on the top inside window frame, one in the middle of wind frame, one in the bottom of window frame, the smallest measurement is your width, for the height measure vertically inside of window frame on left side ,and also measure right side the smaller measurement is toy length, the reason why you use the smaller measurement is so that you could fit new window in frame, then you have to level it horizontal and vertical, you probably need wood shims, after that caulk and install your frame.
My husband replaced ours. He just took out the old ones and put in the new ones, which measured the same. I know you have to screw in the new ones. I found some info on Lowe's website. Here's the link. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=ho...
Hope this helps.
The first poster has an excellent suggestion in taking 3 measurements. I find it interesting that your friend took out their windows and now needs to find replacements. This is inconvenient to say the least. Windows usually take 2+ weeks to get. I don't think there is any such thing as resizing a window and I've put in a fair amount of them. There is no shimming with vinyl replacement windows, they have built-in adjusting mechanism. You will need the remainder of the items that the first poster mentioned. Print out the answers and write down your measurements and take that all to the store you plan on purchasing the replacement windows from. They are really not too expensive but not too quick to get either as they are custom made. You will want to get some plywood to cover the holes you have created in your house as well.

I would take the old one out first, then put in the new one,
Home Depot, home repair book has pictures, instructions and everything. It was easy enough for me to follow and complete a couple of replacement windows..
Your friend needed to be better organised. Surely you would find out the information before removing the windows.
My advice is call a glazier - that's the quickest way to rectify the problem.
Alternatively, if it is just the glass and not the frame that needs replacing.
Take the measurements to a hardware store. Have them cut the glass quarter of an inch smaller than the gap that needs filling. Spread a waterproof silicone bead along the frame where the glass is to be set. Carefully seat the glass in place. if you are using timber mouldings to hold the glass firmly in place make sure you have it cut to suit before you start. Otherwise, have the putty warmed to a working temperature, and use a putty knife to give a clean finish.
