How important is a battery back up sump pump?
Question:One plumber says it is unnecessary, another says he can install one for $1,200. Is that fair? Are there any other options that I am unaware of? Our current sump pump in the basement does not have a battery backup.
Answers:
It depends on how reliable your power is, and how much water you get in your basement. If, under normal circumstances you get little water during a storm, and your power is reliable, you probably don't need the battery backup.
On the other hand, if your pump runs a lot now during water events, and your power is dicey, it would be a good idea to get the backup to prevent water rising in your basement and causing damage and mold.
Your call.
I would double check prices w/ other contractors, before paying that. A battery back-up is a good thing depending on how wet the soil is around the house. Two questions: How often does your sump run and if you lost power what will happen? Get a couple estimates and go with the cheapest one.
How can it be unnecessary?! They are a VERY good idea. They are no different than a regular sump pump, with the exception they are connected to a car-like battery that will power the pump should you lose power. They aren't cheap but they are readily available at the large supply houses (Home Depot, etc). Prices go from $128 to around $500, so you see you can save a good bit of money. It is worth the peace of mind.
great thing to have go to wayne pumps.com price seems very high to me check around
Its very important because when all your power goes out along with your original pump. The battery back up pump will save your day.
There must be an ac/dc converter somewhere in the loop.
I don't think sump pumps normally run on dc...(battery power).
The ones I've installed are a separate pump than your regular sump pump. Personally I would invest that kind of money in a good generator. Then you can run your sump pump, your fridge, your Playstation and all the other critical items.
