What can I do about the bad smell coming from my kitchen sink drain?
Question:It does not have a garbage disposal, and the drainage is not diminished - there is just a SMELL.
Answers:
Pour half cup of baking soda in the sink, then pour 1 cup of white distilled vinegar down - it will bubble away, and will remove any bad smell.
You can repeat as often as you like - flush with running water afterwards.
Get some cheap scented bleach and pour about a cup down and let it sit for a little while before running the water again.
you can buy a scented strainer(lemon, strawberry, vanilla etc) they have them at WALMART, you can also put a little bleach in the drain, I buy lemons and when I get done with my dishes i take about 1/4 of the lemon and squeeze it into the drain on each side and leave a little piece in the strainer in the sink to the scent is lemon not stinky smelly.
pour some bleach down it and run the hot water for like 10 minutes and that should take care of it maybe bleach again after running the water
try about 1/2 cup of lemon juice in the drain and let it just sit for the afternnon... this should help. if there is a drain problem, use some baking soda with vinegar to boil it out.
Baking soda will do it too. Do you have a dishwasher??
May be from that, or just some little thing in the drain, either the bleach or soda will do it.
good luck
Your "trap" has a build-up of sludge.
Just like "high cholesterol".
Use a good drain opener and afterwords squeeze a couple of lemons in it...
zyour druggest can sell you a small bottle of oil of peppermint..(VERY CONCENTRATED) use it also after the drain is cleaned...
Good Luck
baking soda
pour a box of baking soda down, should do this every month or two ,also you could pour in some lemon juice flush with lot.s of water.
You could have food that's stuck in the bottom of the trap. Boil some water and pour it quickly down the drain. This loosens and frees any grease and food there. Let the pipes cool and flush with warm water. Add a cup of bleach, let sit for a little bit, and the odor should disappear.
I had this problem just yesterday. Here's what I did:
Before going to bed pour baking soda down your drain 2 tablespoons should be enough.
In the morning pour a cup of vinegar down your drain.
The baking soda absorbed the smell and the vinegar gets rid of the soda and helps get rid of anything that was in your pipes.
you can try a number of things...there are things you can buy at the store, commercial products. Or, there are a few home remedies...since it isn't a disposal, you can use lemon juice instead of lemons...if you buy a lemon and squeeze it it works better than the lemon juice you buy in a bottle. You can also pour some bleach down with some water or just pour baking soda and let it sit for an hour or two before running any water.
Baking soda and make sure you have a "J" trap on the line.
Baking soda followed by white vinegar, it will fizz and bubble a lot but nothing else works like it!
I like the bleach idea however, I about once a month get cheap bleach and pour it down all my household drains and let it sit overnight.. In the morning don't forget to flush or toxic fumes will be created... It keeps my drains clear and flowing..No stink either..
put some bleach OR baking soda down there.
if you want to avoid chemicals, use concentrated lemon juice.
or try some draino or something. there might stuff stuck to the side but is not causing a clog
20 Mule Team Borax. It's a natural laundry booster and an all-purpose household cleaner. 2-3 tablespoons in the drain, let stand for 15 minutes or so and then rinse drain. I hear lemons work well, but have never tried them!
I dont know but great question and great answers from all. I'm having the same problem at home and I will try one of those home remedies. Thanks to all.
the trap on your sink is to high, it needs to be covered with water at all times preventing the sewer odor from coming in, have a good plumber come in and do the job right.
clean the trap. Bleach may work, but may only work temporarily.
The trap is the part under the sink that is shaped Like a "U"
you should be able to unscrew both ends (many times by hand) of the "U" and pull the trap out Put something under it to catch about 2-3 cups of water, like an old towel. It is probably filled with food and other debris. Take it somewhere (maybe an outside hose) and clean all the junk out of it. It will also be slimey.
You should try opening the U joint, take a bucket or pan and place it under the U - using a pipe wrench remove the joint. Then dump the contents into the bucket - use a bottle brush to push through and clear it. Then use the brush in the top and bottom connectors (there will be lots of sludgy slimy stuff - be prepared) then take the U to another sink and rinse - one all this is done reattach and run hot water through the pipes. If that doesn't fix it you need to get the system snaked you probably are smelling sewer gasses and no amount of freshener will fix that, it needs to be opened up so it will drain. Good Luck!
use room freshner most importent is 2 keep ur kitch clean regulerly
A thing you could try would be caustic soda. caustic sode isn't like bleach. it's like an acid that eats away at anything inside your pipe without harming the pipe itself. Be careful though, it's extremely corrosive and could cause extreme damage to your skin if it came in contact with it. wear rubber gloves when handling the bottle so the caustic soda crystals do not touch you. Hope this helps!
call a plumber to the rescue.
Have you thought about pouring a weakened mixture of bleach into the sink overflow. In my experience a regularly used sink drain should not smell, it's the build-up in the overflow that causes the 'bad odour'.
Definitely worth trying.
After you are finished with the drain for the day, pour a drain cleaner with natural enzymes in it down the drain. The enzymes will eat out the decay and the smell will disappear.
EITHER TRY BLEACH OR BAKING SODA
Well you may need to take the elbow trap pipe off and clean it if thats not it then try 1 cup of bleach down the drain don't rinse for about an hour if that doesn't do it then pour another cup full and leave over night Hell i would even use scented bleach, other tip is to try baking soda down the drain.
Now no more putting your ex's down the drain they leave a bad smell lol lol
Good luck
a: take a box of baking soda and dump it down the drain, run water an hour after..if smell not gone: b: put some vinegar or bleach into the drain and run water an hour later.if still there::c: take the pipes apart and clean them
get a new sink
