How much copper is in an AC condenser unit?
Question:Our AC condenser unit was stolen from the side of our house recently. Police suggested it was stolen for the copper inside. However, the unit would easily be worth $1,000 itself. How much copper is inside to make it worth gutting rather than
reselling the unit itself outright in regular condition?
Answers:
Meth Zombies have been known to attempt to steal the copper located at the 1440V terminals on power stations. They usually find their fried remains attached to the power leads. They will steal whatever they can get money for. A home A/C unit is less dangerous and quickly/easily removed.
Bottom line, your A/C unit is gone. Does homeowners insurance cover the theft?
Only the tubing is copper, maybe 15 or 20 pounds, less than a hundred dollars worth and work to get out. I think the thief needed a compressor.
i dunno took alot apart and being honest not even 5lbs worth in any i've seen...and at 2.65 a pound for used copper right now..wow making just over 13 dollars on your unit...naaaah that ain't why they took it
It was stolen for one of two reasons.
To get a good fix on drugs.
To replace theirs, that went down.
Bottom line Guy. Sorry it happened to you.
People are stealing all sorts of things that have copper in them. They could probably get a few bucks out of it. Depending on the size of the unit it may have 15-30LB of copper. They could also hock the compressor and other parts on Ebay.
It would be a good deal for a meth head.
My buddy who is a firefighter put out a house fire the other day. Some druggie stole a bunch of copper wire and put it in the basement of an abandoned house. He lit it on fire to strip the insulation off. It is worth more at the scrap yard that way.
The guy was so doped up he never considered that the house would catch on fire. People will do crazy things for drug money.
Of course the price of gas maybe somebody needed gas money.
