What do you know about the presence of radon in a house? We are shopping for a home.?
Question:I am clueless about this hazard. Does anyone have any experience with it? Or knowledge about its presence?
Answers:
Radon is a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell or taste. Its presence in your home can pose a danger to your family's health. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America and claims about 20,000 lives annually.
Discounted radon test kits are available from the National Safety Council (or call 1-800-SOS-RADON). Some home improvement stores sell test kits.
You can ask your real estate agent about radon testing in your area. If a home has been tested, the test and its results will be disclosed on the "Disclosure Statement" that the seller has to provide. This statement is full of interesting information about the home, including rodent infestations, leaks and other "good to know" stuff.
For more information check out the "Home Buyer's and Seller's Guide to Radon" from the EPA: http://www.epa.gov/radon/pubs/hmbyguid.h...
I know that it is more common in the mountains and houses with basements can be more susceptible. My friend had it in her house and with proper ventilation and it can be corrected. There are detectors for it you can purchase just like a smoke detector.
I beg of you please, before you purchase any home, have a home inspection done!!!!!!!
They will test for all of those things and more. Don't take any chances and not get a home inspection!!!!!!!!...
I wish I knew more about Radon, but all I really know is that it is a clear odorless gas. A home inspector will find it if it is there.
The EPA suggests that all homes be tested. Check out the site listed below for more information.

This has several answers;
Radon is a natural by product of decay deep with in the earth. It's presence depends on where you live. Some area of the world are more prone to have this than others.Would I worry about it? No no more than I worry about the presence of free cosmic radials passing thur my house.
