I nee d some good pointers on using oil based paint,as in repainting the entry way door, got any info for me?
Question:The door is in pretty good shape inside and out. Its a cranberry color and I,m repainting it the same color to freshen it up. Do i need to sand and prime it first? Whats the protocol?
Answers:
just sand it no primer needed
dont even think off it its a bad idea it will chip its not the best thing to use on door entrys just ues normal paint from homedepo
Same color, yes sand, but I there's not a reason to prime it. Sand, wipe down with a damp cloth, wipe with a dry cloth, then paint.
Primer should go on if your door was already painted with latex and now you want oil based paint.
You will want to sand it first to rough up the glossy finish. Thinning the paint down with just a little paint thinner will help the paint to go on smoother. A great tool for doors is the small thin rollers, with oil base, it can be hard to get rid of the brush marks. The oil paint will definately hold up much better than "regular paint from Home Depot".
hello painter here
glad to see you are using oil. it can be a pain but it's the best for a front door. just a light sanding should do it. then wipe it down with a rag that has paint thinner on it. use a good quality paint brush (purdy or wooster). a cheep brush will leave big brush marks and shed bristles. add some floetrol to your paint. it's a paint conditioner and will make it flow easier for you. don't use too much paint, because it takes longer to dry it will sag if you use too much. make sure the weather is low humidity for at least a day after painting. oil will have a hard time drying in humid temps. when you clean your brush (with paint thinner/mineral spirits) use a little, dump the thinner. use a little more, dump it, and continue as many times as needed untill the thinner stays clear. do not dump it out side or in your drain! put into another container and take it to your hazardous waste depot. it reeks havock on the earth and you. (wear gloves and longsleeves)
good luck!
