There is a lot to learn about taking care of a pool; a lot more than can be answered here. Once you get the hang of it, it's really not that bad. One of the best things to start with is get some kind of maintenance manual, (which you can even do on-line these days.) Some swimming pool supply stores will do training seminars on how to take care of a pool.

Also, feel free to search through the archives of the group (see below) or post questions to any specific issues you may have.

The best thing you could do is locate your nearest Pool Supply Store. They are always eager to help and will test your water for free.
Before you do anything else, go to http://appliancequickfix.com/
They have one great page on pool water and may save your life.
Feel free to drop me a line at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and I'll help you learn about your pool.

I need a little information on it though:
How many gallons is it?
Does it have a sand filter, cartridge filter, or DE filter?
Does it have a chlorine feeder or floating chlorinator?
Does it have any non-standard sanitizer like the Frog or Nature2 on it?
What chemicals do you have on hand (ingredients are best but name brands work too)?
Can you take a sample of the water to your local pool store and have them test it for the following:
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Phosphates

Don't purchase anything at this time as the chemicals I recommend cost far less than their pool counterparts and can be purchased at any grocery store/hardware store/mega mart. Email me the results and the above information and we can take it from there. I'll take you step by step through the entire process of chemical and mechanical maintenance on your pool.

If you don't know the above information (size, filtration, chlorination, etc) feel free to send pictures of the items and measurements of the pool so we can calculate the gallons.
I wish u the best of luck and congrats on your new home!! Im sure u will find the help u need here on FindHomeAnswers but I don't have a clue. Im just like u. I just wanted to say congrats!
The BEST way to maintain your pool?

Buy some Corona Beer and some burgers and hot dogs. Then call me and invite me to come hang around your yard all day during the summer. You'll be amazed at how much better your pool looks after a day or so at work!
