What is wrong with my dryer?

Question:I went to dry my clothes, and nothing.
When turned on the motor humms like it wants to turn but doesn't. When i took it appart, got the drum and belt off, i tried again to cycle it and again the motor hummed as if it wanted to turn but didn't. Could this be as simple as replacing the motor, or am i missing something easier?

Answers:
You aren't missing anything. Replace the motor. Dryer motors, like washer motors, have a start winding. The only difference is washer motors use a capacitor to start, dryer motors don't. Your start winding 'isn't starting'. This isn't that uncommon. If you can tear down the dryer - which you have - you can replace it yourself,

Take the belt off and try to turn the drum.If it turns then it is the motor.
You diagnosis is probably correct. It could be as simple as replacing the motor, which you'll find is not as simple a procedure as you may think. If you are indeed intending to do this, make sure you get the complete model, and probably serial numbers of the unit so that you can get the correct motor when you call the parts house. Good luck.
Its either the motor or the connection to the motor.
It sounds like a bad motor to me. Try turning the motor shaft and see if it turns easily. If it does, then the motor windings are probablly shot. That or the motor bearings.
Sounds like the motor is bad. Usually with dryers unless it is real new or a very expensive model it is a better economic decision to replace the dryer. You will probably be lucky to get a new one installed for less than a $150.00 and you still want have a warranty.
Pretty simple. If your long drum belt is not fractured and the drum turns freely, it's the motor which turns the drum. If you can see it with a flashlight or mirror, check to see if the pulley is turning when it hums. If it's not, time for a new drum motor.

You might discover that the motor cost would convince you to replace the dryer.

I use them regularly.
If the drum turn easily counterclockwise, then the motor is shot, if not there are several things that could be hampering its operation http://appliancequickfix.com/ can tell you exactly how to track down the problem.
