Garage door opener remote control question.?
Question:I have damaged the remote for my garage door. Can I simply purchase a new remote and program it, or do I need to purchase a whole new garage door opener. If I can purchase just the remote, do I have to go back to the manufacturer or are there "universal" ones.
Answers:
It depends on a couple of things. Older openers are not compatible with newer remotes. Security features have been added over the last several years, the old openers are not equipped to deal with that. You can still buy remotes for the old openers, but you may have to look a bit more.
There are two major manufacturers of openers -- Chamberlain and Genie. Both make openers that are sold under other brand names as well (or at least the major parts for them). Remotes for one or the other will usually work, but if you have a Genie design then the Chamberlain remote will not work and visa versa.
If you still have the remote, remove the battery cover and look for a model number. This should give the information needed to find a replacement, including the brand compatibility and the age issue. Otherwise, you will need the brand and model of your opener to begin your search.

Hi,
Loews or Home Depot have Universal remotes for $20. You can easily program your door opener to recognize your new remote by following the remote's manual. You'll likely just need a ladder to press on a couple buttons on the door opener hanging from the ceiling of your garage. Good luck.
