Answers:
I am sure that your washer is not from 1940, so give more
information. Before that, check with http://appliancequickfix.com/
Check out the pump, and check out repairclinic.com. It's a great resource for appliance repair.
What exactly is overflowing; where is the water coming from, and where is it going?
poss able cause
the drain has ether tree roots or alot of grass root a regular snake wont cut tho the roots you have to have one with a spinning head that cuts tho them if the washer is pumping out and into the drain than its got to be stopped up down the line some where another possible causes where tho old black iron pipe goes out from under the house and converts into a concrete line and than empties into your septic tank over time the concrete lines will collapse blocking flo you might have to call in a pumber with a bigger spinning snake good luck
Sounds like a job for rooter-router. That's about the only way your going to get the drain line clear.
If your washer goes back to the 1940's you've got a real antique there. A washer usually last about ten years.
Check that "nylon thing" in the line, see if it's holding back something.
