How many times can a hole in the roof be fixed?
Question:Before replacing the whole roof is unavoidable? We live in the desert so it doesn't rain the often, but when it does it is a torrential downpour that brings the rain inside. My mate is resistant to spending money on a new roof (obviously if I had the money I would get it done). Is postponing the replacement doing more harm than good?

Here is your answer.
Most local "fire codes" say 3 layers of shingles is the limit.
Anything over that and the weight of the shingles can damage the structure over time and firemen can't chop through it with a fire axe to vent the building in time of fire.
Most people will apply a 2 layer of shingles and buy themselves 5 or 6 years before a full roof job is needed,

The hole can only be fixed one time, anything beyond that is either a unsuccessful attempt at fixing (not really fixed) or a new hole.
The more water comes in the more damage and expense.
really depends on who fixed the last one ?
but ive been fixeing holes over 20 years now, but when it comes down to it , the roof is the most part of your home,
look at it like this, can you live with out your roof?
no i guess not , time to get up here ,and work on it . preety easy really ,use tin to cover the hole and use new shingles ,will work short term ,to you get the funds,
I get it, this is one of those little riddles, right? You have a hole in your roof and you fix it. Therefore, there is no hole left so it can never be fixed again. Thanks, that was fun.
depends on what part of the roof is leaking, and what the roof is constructed of ,normally roofs have a life span of 25 years and if the shingles are not the very best you may have to change the hole roof depending on wether the seal has been comprise
A new roof is the same as a repair.
New Roof - remove all shingles and felt paper, inspect plywood replace bad sheets of plywood repaper and reshingle.
Proper roof repair - remove shingles around effected area ( typical for a leak is to clear atlest 2 feet to all sides)cut felt sheet, inspect plywood- if necessary clear enough shingles and felt to replace 1 full sheet not forgetting to install the spacers, recover the felt ensuring the overlaps are in the same direction as rest, replace damaged missing shingles.
Down side to repair is the cosmetic apperace - old and new shingles wont match, Positive side to it is that anyone that can use a hammer, screwdriver, razor knife, roofing nails and a crowbar can do it for pennies on the dollar compared to contracting it.
You are talking about the covering on the roof.
Cracks develop in the roof covering & they can be fixed any number of times.
Its time to recover the roof when there are too many leaks & the patching becomes a big bother.
Obviously there becomes a time when the rains ruin things in side & it becomes costly to replace them.
Each time the roof gets wet & then dries out it gets a little more damage. (More & bigger leaks)
