Why does the salt in my water softener harden?
Question:My current water softener is only 10 years old but we keep having a problem with the salt getting rock hard. It's a bear to break up and then it happens again in a few months. The softener is in the basement in the laundry however we have both A/C & heat. Anyone know why mine keeps doing it or what brand would be better. Thanks much
Answers:
My water softener is 20 yrs old, a Culligan.
I use the "Morton Yellow Bag Pellet Salt" and haven't had any trouble at all.
It could be the cheap quality pellets you may be purchasing, and (that is only a guess if they are cheap quality).
Culligan where I live HIGHLY recommends using Solar Salt to help prevent this or eliminate this condition. High humidity can cause this condition as well. I would focus on the quality of your salt first.
Talk to a water conditioning specialist and see what they say or recommend as well.
There may be too much water in the storage tank and it's getting the salt wet. If your machine is 10 years old, you may want to think about a new one. They're not cheap, but they're always improving the controls on them. We have a GE (from Home Depot) and it works pretty well.
Use only morton pellet salt (yellow bag) Use almost all the salt up before adding more. Only the bottom inch is used each time it regenerates. While breaking the salt up you could have punched a hole in the salt platform. The only way you will know is to use up all the salt and check it.
