Unknown aged pool filter, recently acid dipped fingers, and I can't keep psi down any help?

Question:This filter is an ec65 Hayward system. I put in the recommended 6 lbs of earth ( per side of filter). This has been going on for the last couple of years. It starts off at 7 lbs of pressure, where it should be, and within minutes goes to 15 lbs or higher. Can't figure it out.

Answers:
Sounds like a discharge problem. Rising pressure means you need more outlet. Just change the outlets in the pool to enlarge the opening. Also, pressure gagues are notoriously inaccurate, and you could need a new one.

How old is this Filter?!?

And what does it use to Actually Filter the water?!?
Does it use a Cartridge, or Sand?!?

You said it has 'Fingers', so I must Assume this is a Sand Filter.

You should Check for Leaks, including Air Leaks.

If your Filter is getting Worn-Out, I would suggest you get a New Pool Filter.

I have worked as a Pool Maintinance Tech for over a year, and have seen people try to make their Pool Filters last until they are Trash!! And their Pools reflect it!!
This is the WRONG thing to do!! If your Filter is getting Worn-Out, just Replace it!! You will have Problems until you Replace it, if this is the case. So don't try to make it go for another year. If you try to do this, your Pool Water will not be as clean, and you will start a Vicious Cycle of Pool Problems.

The Filter is the Most Important part of your Pool!
If you care about your Pool, then invest in Getting a New Filter. You will be Glad you did!! :)
