How do you clean a window air conditioning unit?

Question:wanting to get rid of old stale smell

Answers:
I would strongly advise wrapping the fan motor in a plastic garbage bag. The coil on the inside of the window is the evaporator. That is the one that makes the smell. There is a blower wheel behind the evaporator and that can cause an odor also. Coil cleaner will not clean it well because it is steel. Use Mr. Clean or some such for it. The coil outside the window is called the condenser. It doesn't affect your odor problem but it certainly needs to be cleaned. Don't spray water into the control panel. Thats where your on/off switch, t'stat, ect. is.

take it out it's cabinet, load it in the back of a truck, take it to the local car wash and spray the coils down good and your smell should be gone.
Go to a HVAC dealer or HVAC supply store and ask them to sell you a gallon of condenser cleaner. Then, after UNPLUGGING the unit, remove the cover and use a pump sprayer like an exterminator would use and, following the label indications, mix it up and spray it on the condensers. Then after about an hour, use a garden hose and clean it all off, Do it twice if it is really crusty. Let it dry thoughroly and then plug er' in and breathe easy.
