How can i fix my home a/c unit when it's freezed up, before i call a repair man?
Question:my a/c stopped working last night and I saw that the pipe was froze up. So I checked the filters and there fine, then I attempted to turn off the a/c and just turn on the fan blower to help melt ice. For some reason I cannot turn on the fan blower w/o turning the a/c back on which is weird because most will let you do that. Anyway so I just left the a/c off til this morning so I turned it on, it kicked on, but there was absolutely no air coming out of the vents. So what could be wrong here? Can I fix this problem w/o calling a repair man?
Answers:
If your A/C is freezed up you need to call a pro. Probably low on freon. Need a licensed professional for that.
no probably not. There is some reason that the unit froze up. You don't want to cause more damage to the unit - or electrocute yourself in the process.
Yep you are totally froze up. Youve already let it sit overnite (thats what I had to do in the house I grew up in) so you may have to bite the bullet and call the repair man...it will be costly though. GL
call the repair man it sounds like the thermostat is not working
there is a drain line coming from the unit to the outside, make sure it isnt plugged up or pointing up in the air. mine does the same thing when the brick is taken off of it, it is like the water cant get out and it backs up and freezes!
If the air handler came on (the inside unit) but no air was coming out, it is usually a sign that the coils are frozen or dirty preventing air from circulating.
Open the A/C cover and take a look at them. If they are dirty, clean them with some warm water. If they have Ice, your system is low on freon. Most of the time is due to a leak. Follow the lines to the outside unit and check for an oily residue. That is where it is leaking from.
Unfortunately, you will need to call a pro for this. But armed with the knowledge of where the leak is. The repair bill should be under $200.
The unit is probably low on Freon. Call a repair tech and let the unit defrost. They havew to wait till it derfosts to work on it.
You should find out why there is no air coming out of the vents when you turn the unit on. Check the circulating fan. If it is running then there has to be something blocking the air. Could be all the ice on the evaporator coil didn't melt yet. That doesn't seem likely though if you turned it off all night.
yes you can.. you need to open up the air handler where the a-coil is and clean it very good...you will need a fin comb or some kind of stiff brush to remove the built up dirt from a-coil...flush it with some water and reassemble..if it was very dirty this is probably why it froze up...if it freezes up after you clean it and everything is working ...then you will need to call a serviceman to come and gas it up.
