What are the strange covers on the windows of this one house?
Question:There is this one huge, very nice house in my neighborhood with these weird covers over all its windows. I call them covers because I have no idea what else to call them.
You cant see any of the window, in each spot where the window should be there is a big solid gray rectangle.
From the street, each one looks like a piece of tough gray fabric stretched over a rectangular frame. One big arced window above the front door has the cover inside it rather than outside however.
I can't for the life of me figure out what the heck the covers are and why they are there. They've been there ever since I moved to this neighborhood a year ago.
Answers:
She's right. More than likely they are black (or grey for this matter) mesh screens like on a screen door. They reduce radiant heat from entering the house, as well as keep in the heat in the winter. They can cut your electric bill drastically.
It sounds like they are darkening screens. Just like regular screens, but darker. It helps keep the temperature down inside the house.
