Last Christmas's tree, in a pot, is growing new foliage, how do I look after it?
Question:I had a very small Christmas tree, in a pot, left it in the garden and it is growing lots of new very healthy looking needles, about an inch long at the moment. It has lots of dead branches, mainly at the bottom, plus the very top doesn't look too good. But about 3/4 of it is looking really good! Is it likely to be OK for next Christmas, and how should I look after it to give it the best chance? Thanks.
Answers:
no no no, never re pot a tree this time of year ! Always wait til winter ! best thing you can do is cut the top off and allow it to grow upwards, as for the dead stuff on it , cut it off, there will be new branches that will take its place. You should never feed a tree on a weekly basis, only on a monthly basis. All types of conifers need attention but because they are evergreen trees, they will thrive on rain water. I have a container that fills with rain water just for my trees and my trees look wonderful. keep trimming them to allow new growth ! Good luck, I love trees and plants, a true green finger !
Re-pot, feed tri-weekly and water when dry.
Water it a frequently as the grass. Feed it, my need a larger pot as it grows.
Take of the lower dead branches. make sure it has plenty of sun and every now and then use a fertalizer specifically for pine trees. Also, water accordingly. How fun! Christmas year 'round!
repot with a good mulch & leave in semi shaded area
This happened to me a few years ago. I re-potted the tree into a larger pot in a good compost and fed it. The year after we had it in the house again for Christmas and then the following spring I planted in the garden and it was so nice I used to put lights on it. I have moved now but the tree is still there and the new owners love it.
It is getting root bound. If you can plant it in the ground it would be best. Many home depots or lowes have tree spikes for fertalizing , for under 1$ each.
Pine trees like clay soil to live in I don't really know why but that is where you will find the most pine trees.
