Too much sun through blinds for sliding glass door, help.?
Question:Our sliding glass door is 73" wide I think, and we have the standard vertical blinds. Well that is not doing enough to block the sun in the day time. Should we put curtains on top of the blinds, or is there some kind of special light blocking blinds we can use? Is curtains on top of blinds tacky?
Answers:
The reflective film will help, but do not put it on the inside of double-paned glass as it can cause the glass to crack. If you can find the film made to go outside, use that or no film. Other than that, I've always found curtains to be the best since you can get them to block nearly 100% of the light.
You can buy a film that's tinted and you stick it to the glass with it allowing all the light in but not the piercing sunlight. My mum's covered the inside of a conservatory with it an it's worked a treat.
Have you ever thought about putting window tinting on. I have it on a lot of my windows. You can either get the kind that is like window clings or the kind that has a contact residue on it. I use that along with my blinds, plus it add privacy. You can see out but no one can see in, during the day that is. At night if the lights are on, you can see inside from out.

I agree with Andy S. You can get the film from light to dark and also one that reflects the sun. If you can, turn the blinds the opposite direction. This sometimes helps. The film would be much cheaper at a discount store rather than an auto parts store.
Curtains on top is not tacky. It is cool. You can do several layers and change the mood of the room very easy. Blinds, sheers, and panels, maybe a coordinating topper or valance would look great.
If you get insulated panels on a traverse rod, you can close them easily for light control.
Use an outdoor awning. Kind of like and outdoor curtain. This will really like. I put a pergola up and use wisteria vine on it. Looks great but alot of work.
Curtains on top of blinds is not tacky! Buy some thick curtains that you can pull into or away from the window. You can also find a lot of hardware from rods to tie backs to tassels and so much more! There are many catalogs that you can order online for free that will give you many great ideas!
Remove the blinds and put up a room darkening type of long curtain.
