Why do people bother with lampshades ?

Question:A bare bulb is fine in my book. Or any room.

Answers:
I don't even have electricity at home, so even a bulb is fancy in my book.

They cut the glare of the bulb
They soften the lighting
They lamp looks nicer with a shade
Lampshades diffuse the light, and keep it from being so bright. They also provide protection from someone hitting the bulb and possibly
1. Burning themselves on the bulb.
2. Breaking the bulb (and possible injury).

Also, if something were to knock the lamp over when you're not home (like a cat or dog), it protects the heat from the bulb catching something on fire as quickly, as the shade would not allow the bulb to touch an object.
I'm sure there's more reasons...
Lampshades cut down the glare of the light bulb and people use them as part of their decor, such as certain period themes. If you don't mind the glare and not much into decorating. its your call.
bare bulbs hurt my eyes.
those bare bulbs are so blinding and harsh and unflattering and show all the dust and dust bunnies
To prevent glare.
Reduces glare and looks pretty.
The shade diffuses the light. Looking at a bare bulb is like looking into the sun, it hurts your eyes and makes it difficult to see other things. I guess that would be good if you live in a redneck trailer though. The less you see, the better!
